Getting to Washington DC
Flights to Washington from the UK are quite straightforward, with direct flights available from London, and connecting flights from the many regional airports.

All flights arrive into Washington Dulles International Airport, named after a gentleman called John Foster Dulles, who was the Washington born US Secretary of State under President Eisenhower. The airport itself is a hub airport for United Airlines, meaning they route some of their flights through here on the way to other destinations. This, in addition to the people visiting Washington itself, makes it one of the top 10 busiest airports in the world.
The airport is actually around 25 miles to the south of Washington, making it quite a ride into the city. Sometimes the hotels in Washington can provide a pick up service, although the best way to get to Washington for anyone staying more than a couple of days or so is to pick up a hire car, as depots are situated in the airport. Prices for Washington car hire are far better when booked prior to travel through a UK supplier since the rates are reduced in what is a highly competitive market.
For those unfamiliar with car hire in Washington, the major organisations such as Dollar provide cars that are never more than 6 months old, are always automatic and all have air conditioning. They offer unlimited mileage, full insurance and, for a small fee if booked in the UK, can include additional drivers, all fully insured. It is a great way to get around, providing the flexibility to go wherever and whenever and is also an excellent way of experiencing that bit more of America.
